Self Discovery

People seek out therapy for a variety of reasons – they may be dealing with issues such as depression, anger, bereavement, trauma, relationship problems or family conflicts. They may suffer from eating disorders, panic attacks, insomnia, stress or anxiety. Feelings like sorrow, pain, rejection, confusion or anger may be interfering with their day-to-day lives. The range of problems that people come to talk about are as varied as the people themselves. Some people don’t know what the issue is – they may simply be unhappy – whilst others want to talk about a specific difficult situation. Clients sometimes come to talk about a particular problem, only to discover that it’s something else that is the real trouble. Relationships, loss and change are all common themes, as are anxiety and stress. Significant life changes, such as the ending of a relationship or moving home or area, can have a major impact on us. Emotional problems do not necessarily go away if we ignore them, so it makes sense to deal with them as soon as possible.

It is usual to feel hesitant or unsure about seeking therapeutic help. If you think that your problems aren’t important enough to warrant therapy, or if you feel that you being ‘self-indulgent’, I would particularly encourage you to come for an initial session to discuss your concerns. An introductory session is a chance for us to meet each other and explore whether therapy may be helpful for you.

You will be charged for this session but there is no obligation to continue. Please call me on 086 338 3398 to make an appointment. Frequently you will get my answering machine but I will return your call. You can also text or email me your details and I will get back to you. info@selfdiscovery.ie

There is no time frame; it can be from 1 to 60 weekly sessions or more. Each individual person has their own pace and therapy allows for this. Once we have decided to work together, I will ask you to commit initially for 6 sessions at the end of which we will have a review.

Therapy/Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change and of reducing confusion. By listening attentively and patiently the Therapist can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client’s point of view.
This can help to see things from a different viewpoint and possibly allow them to be seen more clearly. It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action. In the weekly counselling sessions the client can explore various aspects of their life and feelings, both present and past, talking about them freely and openly in a way that is rarely possible with friends or family. Bottled up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief, sadness, and embarrassment can become very intense.
Therapy offers an opportunity to explore these feelings, with the possibility of making them easier to understand. The Therapist will work at providing a safe place to make this possible. The Therapist will encourage the expression of feelings and will be able to accept and reflect the client’s problems without becoming burdened by them. How many sessions?
